Holding up the Umbrella: Collaborative Leadership in Disaster Recovery – Arbour Festival
ARTLANDS PANEL
Eastern Riverina Arts Executive Director Tim Kuryowicz, Regional Arts Australia Fellow 2020 and artist Vanessa Keenan, Scotia Monkovich the Executive Officer of the Creative Recovery Network, alongside Paul Holton, Director Community and Corporate with Snowy Valleys Council and Chair of the Cultural Development Network and Darren Moffitt from Bushfire Recovery Victoria will present HOLDING UP THE UMBRELLA: COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP IN DISASTER RECOVERY at Artlands 2021 – Australia’s largest regional arts gathering in 20 years.
Marking the first anniversary of the Dunns Rd fire in the Snowy Valleys was always going to be challenging, and it was always going to be complex. Eastern Riverina Arts created Arbour Festival, a 50-day festival featuring 50 creative events, workshops and experiences spread across 4 towns all impacted by the fire. The community came together, with great crowds attending the many exhibitions, workshops and experiences led by local makers, creatives and knowledge-holders.
Artlands is a strategic exchange that responds to emerging trends, discovers new ideas, considers adapted approaches and showcases artists as well as highlighting the creative and cultural sector across regional, rural and remote Australia. The event is being held in Launceston, but with current restrictions in place this particular panel will be one of many streamed online.
In this panel, practitioners will share their learnings about the human complexities of disaster response, the challenges and opportunities that arise when artists collaborate within the complex patchwork of governments and agencies working on recovery efforts, and the significance of place and people as a basis for creative collaboration.
