Beckett moment

This tree lives in my neighbourhood and I have seen it – and ignored it – on countless occasions. But when a nearby street light was replaced, I saw the tree as if for the very first time, and in reaching for my camera, I was reminded of photography’s capacity to also refresh our vision.

In looking at what I had captured, Samuel Beckett’s ‘Waiting for Godot’ inevitably came to mind, but with no Vladimir or Estragon in sight, it seemed that the ritual of waiting was now enmeshed in the act of viewing. While the question of who or what is being waited for has always been open to debate, it is not difficult to imagine that in this instance, a new dawn – affording us a way out of our recent challenges – would be high on the list possibilities.
