Empty Fifths

‘Empty Fifths’ charts the process by which we come to see a new place. Informed by my relocation from Sydney to Wagga Wagga in 2015, the painting’s gestural sweeps and high-key colour palette are suggestive of local flora and landscape. However, the imprecision of these marks also demonstrate how the contours and character of the Riverina, the breadth of both its physical and its cultural horizons, emerge gradually for the new arrival, like a photograph coming slowly into focus.
